Review - AI Audio & Video Editing - Descript

User-friendly AI-powered transcription and audio editing tool.

It allows you to quickly transcribe audio and video files, edit them as easily as a text document, and even generate synthetic voices that can read your text aloud.

One of the standout features of Descript is its ability to use AI to automatically remove filler words and hesitations like "um" and "uh" from your audio recordings. This saved me hours of video editing, you can also chose to ‘remove filler gaps’ but this made my jumps too choppy and I was getting whip lash.

They also claim to have a real-time collaboration feature for teams but I am solo so I did not try out this feature. “Descript allows you to share your projects with others and work together to edit them, which can be especially helpful for remote teams or individuals working on a project together.”

My Review: Using the Free Version

  • My Skillset: I am not a professional video editor, I have basic skills when it comes to editing, I can edit scenes and I barely know about overlays I have used tools such as Canva and CapCut for editing but mostly for personal social media pages like Instagram. I am currently attempting to understand Davinci Resolve 18 however this is WAY beyond my skillset currently.

  • My Need: I interviewed industry leaders during DataCloud Congress Monaco in April 2023 and I wanted to test an AI based tool for the editing. I used a GoPro 11 paired with Saramonic Pro mics (This helped A LOT because I had good quality video (2k) and clear sound. Also my lighting was good enough not to need color editing etc.

  • Functions Used: Auto script, highlights, clip split, video overlays, audio background,

  • Enhanced by: I used Canva Pro ready-made templates for the intro and ending scenes.

  • The bad: Latency - Even though I believe i meet the specs, when working with an 11min interview which had multiple layers, audio and text, the latency was annoying.

My Computer Specifications.

Purchased end of 2022, its pretty brand new and while doing this review I had 300GB free HD space. I believe I meet Windows System Recommendations by Descript so the latency was disappointing.

I found this tool very user friendly and the auto-captions understood different accents much better than CapCut. Editing the captions was also like editing a Word document and when you delete the word, the video adjusts automatically. The automatic filler word removal was brilliant and the free version detects um, uh etc however, you need to manually remove any other filler words like: ‘You know’', ‘Like’ etc.

You can detect speakers, add chapters, overlays (merge videos into the scenes), audio easily which I felt really enhanced my videos. There is some basic video editing, like you can crop and zoom into a speaker. There are more editing functions with the paid service but I did not buy this tool when reviewing. I liked the way I could change background captions to my brand color.

You get 45 mins of transcript which means the free version gives you enough time to test out the service & doesn’t expire.
